to meet orangejello and lemonjello

i am in awe of where i come from.

as long as i can remember, we had this thing called "downtown alive" where they block off the streets and there's live music and everybody drinks and dances and, you know, EVERYBODY is there. --nothing unheard of, but it was every week. for like, half the year.
well, its been..i don't know..5 years since i've gone. and they built an amphitheater (permanent) open to all the street and stuff where people come-every week-and bring foldig chairs and dance zydeco and drive home drunk.

but the most interesting part is, our parents all went, but we could have given a shit. well, not true-we got to run around like banchees with all the other kids whos parents went, but we certainly never danced.
well, a bunch of my friends dance regularly in austin--like lindy hop and ballroom, and all that--and now they come back into town periodically to zydeco.
this weekend is also one of our town's 2 biggest festivals, so they all came in this weekend.

boy oh boy it was fun to watch them dance.
and i realized a few things i have brought with me of the culture, things that may or may not play out well in los angeles, but i have acknowledged and accepted them as me anyhow:

*clothes for comfort over cuteness. cuteness is a plus, but if you can't move in em, it ain't worth it.
*don't let sweatiness keep you from a good time.
*switch partners

(heh. that last one was a joke--some of the couples would only dance with each other)
((but they weren't having nearly as much fun))

i know i have a lot of work to do, but i cannot wait to spend this weekend learning to zydeco.
we're meeting for a zydeco brunch tomorrow morning.
where else do you do that!?

oh- that reminds me actually,..in baltimore aparantly you do that.
we met these two guys from balitmore who came down here for the festival to dance.
they say they have a zydeco club in baltimore and they have big parties eevry month and dance.
like-150 people he said.
and he knew all the local musicians and even the freaking clubs, asking who was playing at clubs i've never even been to.

if there's a club in LA it just might become my gym.

time to rest up so i can boogie down in the am.
